STAKEHOLDER PENSIONS

A stakeholder pension is a simple, low-cost, tax-efficient pension that is flexible and secure.

It was introduced by the government in April 2001 to encourage people to save for their retirement. The government also restricted the charging structure to ensure that it is a low-cost scheme.

If you do not have access to an employer’s sponsored pension arrangement or are taking a career break, then this could be the pension scheme for you.

PERSONAL PENSION PLANS

A personal pension plan is an arrangement where you pay a regular monthly contribution or a lump sum to a pension provider who will invest it on your behalf. This is suitable for:

People who are self-employed.

People who are not working but can afford to pay into a pension.

Employees who do not have access to a company scheme or choose not to join it.

Employees who wish to top up the money they would get from a company pension.

A personal pension may not be suitable if:

Your employer offers a company scheme.

Your employer offers access to a stakeholder scheme with an employer contribution.

A pension is a long term investment. The fund value may fluctuate and can go down. Your eventual income may depend upon the size of the fund at retirement, future interest rates and tax legislation.

SELF-INVESTED PERSONAL PENSIONS (SIPP)

A self invested personal pension gives you the choice and control to decide when, where and how you invest the assets of your pension fund.

Some examples are:

Unit Trusts

Commercial Property

OEICS

UK Gilts

US & European Shares

Bonds

Cash & Deposit Accounts

Any contributions into a SIPP will attract tax relief at your personal rate.

This is a specialised area, so it’s important to get the right advice.

PENSION DRAWDOWN

This is a personal pension plan from which you can draw an income. It can allow you to unlock the tax-free cash element of your pension plan without taking an annuity.

The remaining pension fund is still invested, so you have full flexibility while taking advantage of a tax-efficient environment.

PENSION ANNUITIES

An annuity is a type of insurance that provides a regular income in exchange for a lump sum. Annuities provide the backbone of retirement solutions in the UK.

Everyone with a pension fund must decide by the age of 75 whether to take an annuity or to use an ASP (Alternatively Secured Pension).

With an ASP, you can continue to invest your pension savings and draw income from the fund within certain limits.

You do not have to take the annuity offered by your pension provider. Annuity rates vary between pension companies, so it’s worth speaking to us about the ‘open market option’.

Remember, we offer completely independent financial advice.

Tax Treatment

The tax treatment is dependent on individual circumstances and may be subject to change in future.
